IDIOPHONES

Idiophones are broken into seven different classes -

A concussive idiophone is an instrument that produces sound when two or more similar parts are hit or struck together. i.e. cymbals, wooden sticks, hands clapping.

A percussive idiophone is an instrument producing sound when struck or hit with a mallot or a stick. i.e. balaphone, tongue drum, gong, cowbell.

A shaken idiophone produces a sound when shook, made of various materials filling, woven or strung onto a vessel. i.e. shakerman shakka shakers, maracas, shekere.

A scraped idiophone is actually scraped, a vessel has ridges made into it and a small stick or comb is scrapped over the vessel or surface. i.e. frogs, guiro, washboard.

A friction idiophone produces its sound by rubbing. i.e. singing bowls, Ocean Harp, musical saws.

A plucked idiophone is classified by its ability to be plucked by hands. jews harp, kalimba,

A stamped or stamping idiophone is determined by the source of the sound of the two instruments. Stamping is by bringing the instrument to a sounding block or hard surface. Stamped is when the surface produces the sound more than the stamping instrument.

Welcome to CommUnity Drum

A CommUnity Drum is for personal and group expression, throughout time the gift of rhythm has been shared through music, song, and dance. It is our goal to provide a valuable resource for information on drums and percussion instruments and an affordable solution to the search for a percussion kit to start your very own CommUnity Drumcircle.

It is important to pick your drum wisely, every drum is unique, with individual characteristics and voice. We import drums from around the world, but most of our drums come from West Africa.

Group rhythm making evolves from the earliest times of man or woman, when we couldn't communicate verbally we grunted or banged something as a form of shared expression. That is a Drum Circle! When we join together in UNITY to express ourselves through another voice. Sometimes individuals need to let their voice be head, like creating art, playing drums, shakers, bells, etc. offers a therapeutic tool to every individual.

With the proper Facilitator, drum circles become a place for the individual and the group to experience rhythmical music. Rhythm is inside us all, from the first music we made with our mothers in the womb, our hearts beating in and out of rhythm 'til it became our own. Drumming excites the youngest to the old, I have yet to meet a person afraid to try the drum.
